Question Number Three: Engineering has always been dominated by men but now young women are being encouraged to become engineers and technicians and I think this is a good idea. There is a problem thought because a lot of women want to have babies and it is difficult to mix family and work. Career breaks allow women to quit work and then come back after a fixed time to a job that is ready and waiting for them. We did this survey knowing full well that many employers had no experience of career breaks, so our survey was also a way of letting them know about career break schemes.
1. What was half of the nation excluded from the recruitment of engineering in the past? 2. In what way can career breaks be useful for women? 3. What is the writer’s attitude towards career breaks for women engineers? 4. What does the underlined word (quit) mean? 5. What does the pronoun (them) line (5) refer to?
Question Number Four: Since the days of the first Olympic Games almost 8.000 years ago , sport has occupied a unique place in the ritual expression of the culture and self – image of no wonder , then , that wherever one looks football can be found exercising its influence . People seem to feel that football, or indeed all sports and pastimes, can allow any number of communities to physically express their history and cultural on the field of play. This power of football has not been always recognized by academia or the media (which tend to put sport on the back pages) but politicians have seized upon it.
1. Why did football become important in the 20th century? 2. How did each of these groups (the academia, the media, the politicians) view the influence of football? 3. What is the writer’s attitude towards football? 4. What does the underlined word (unique) line 2 mean? 5. What does the underlined pronoun (their) refer to?
