The notorious lord of kerak , Reynald de Chatillon , carried out an attack on a peacful caravan of Muslim pilgrims in southern Jordan in 1186 . He refused to compensate , despite a truce that existed between the Muslims and the crusadors at the time. Saladin, the leader of the Muslims, accordingly gathered a huge army, and the Franks and Muslims met in a great battle at the horns of Hittin in Galilee on 4th July 1187. The Crusading army was annihilated , almost all of the great crusader lords were either killed or taken prisoner. The king of Jerusalem himself , Guy de lusignan, was the chief captive. Other Captive lords included Reynald de Chatillon . The flower of the crusading spirit was wiped out in a blow. |
