  The survey
section of the Engineering Industry Training Board conducted this telephone
survey of Personnel managers in engineering companies to find out their
attitudes to career breaks for women engineers.  The survey resulted in
157 completed interviews.  Thirty–one of the employers interviewed had
had experience of women engineers taking career breaks and returning to work In conclusion, this generally positive response to career breaks for women engineer indicates that the introduction of career break schemes may allow highly skilled women to remain in the work force. The cost of training an engineer is considerable. This investment is normally recovered within about five years, but if an engineer then leaves, the company will not receive a full return on its investment. Career breaks can be used to make sure that the investment in training women engineers is not lost.
